Eggless vs Vegan vs Less-Sweet Cakes: What's the Difference? (Singapore Guide)
Updated 24 October 2026
Short answer: an eggless cake is made without eggs but may still contain dairy; a vegan cake contains no animal products at all (no eggs, dairy, butter or honey); and a less-sweet cake is about taste, not ingredients, meaning a recipe balanced to use less sugar than a typical bakery cake. A cake can be one, two or none of these, so it pays to ask exactly what you're getting before you order for a party in Singapore.
What does "eggless" mean?
Eggless means no egg goes into the cake we bake for your order. Bakers replace the structure and moisture eggs normally give with other ingredients, so the sponge still rises and stays soft.
Families choose eggless for many reasons: vegetarian guests who avoid eggs, religious or cultural practice, an egg allergy in the family, or simply a guest list with mixed needs. In Singapore, eggless cakes are a common request for children's parties, office celebrations and family gatherings.
What eggless does not mean is just as important:
- It isn't automatically dairy-free. Fresh cream, butter and buttercream are common in eggless cakes.
- It isn't automatically allergy-safe. Unless a kitchen is dedicated egg-free, cross-contact is possible.
- It isn't vegan. Vegan is a stricter standard (see below).
At Happy Cake, almost every design comes Eggless, including our ombre, Korean-style, kids' theme and photo cakes, and favourites such as Eggless Snowy Blackforest, Eggless Elegant Fruit Smash and Eggless Strawberry Blush. The exceptions are Mango Splash, Ultimate Hazelnut and the cookies & cream (Oreo) cake. Eggless is generally about 10–15% more, and Eggless cakes start from $45.90 on our live catalogue.
What does "vegan" mean?
A vegan cake contains no animal-derived ingredients at all. That rules out eggs, but also milk, cream, butter, most buttercreams, cream cheese, honey and gelatine. Vegan bakers typically use plant milks, plant-based fats and plant-based frostings.
So every vegan cake is eggless, but not every eggless cake is vegan. If a guest is vegan, or has a dairy allergy, an "eggless" label on its own is not enough. You need to ask about the frosting, fillings and decorations too.
To be clear about our own cakes: Happy Cake's Eggless cakes are not vegan, because our buttercream is dairy-based. If you need a fully vegan cake, please look for a baker that makes vegan cakes specifically.
What does "less sweet" mean?
"Less sweet" describes how a cake tastes, not what's left out of it. A less-sweet cake still contains sugar; the recipe is simply balanced so the flavour of the fruit, chocolate or cream comes through without a cloying finish.
Many Singapore families prefer this, especially for children's parties (where a very sweet cake often goes half-eaten) and for celebrations with grandparents. Be wary of precise claims like "50% less sugar" unless the baker can explain what they're comparing against. At Happy Cake we don't publish a sugar percentage. Our recipes are balanced to be less sweet than typical bakery cakes, across every range.
Less sweet is also not the same as "sugar-free" or "diabetic-friendly". If someone needs to manage their sugar intake for medical reasons, check the details with the baker and their own doctor.
Eggless vs vegan vs less-sweet at a glance
| Eggless | Vegan | Less sweet | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contains eggs? | No | No | Usually yes |
| Contains dairy? | Often yes | No | Usually yes |
| Contains sugar? | Yes | Yes | Yes, but less |
| Main reason people choose it | Vegetarian, religious or egg-free needs | No animal products | Taste and lighter finish |
The three can overlap. A Happy Cake Eggless cake, for example, is both eggless and less sweet, but it is not vegan.
What about nuts and allergies?
None of these labels says anything about nuts. Cakes with nuts: Mango Splash, Jolly Chocolate (Classic and Eggless) and Ultimate Hazelnut, which is made with hazelnut cream and crunch. Our kitchen also handles eggs, dairy and nuts, so we can't promise zero cross-contact. For any severe allergy, please WhatsApp us before you order so we can tell you clearly what we can and can't do.
Questions to ask before you order
- Is the cake itself eggless, or only the sponge? What about the frosting and decorations?
- Does it contain dairy, and is the buttercream dairy-based?
- Does it contain nuts, and does the kitchen handle nuts?
- How much more does the eggless version cost?
- Can the eggless version be delivered on my date, including same-day?
